It was originally founded as Nepal Industrial and Commercial (NIC) Bank on 21 July 1998, and was renamed NIC Asia Bank on 30 June 2013 after merging with Bank of Asia Nepal — the first merger between two commercial banks in Nepalese banking history (final NRB approval given 26 April 2013). After the merger it was named Bank of the Year 2013-Nepal by The Banker (Financial Times, UK).
